Sports Testing
Last year one of my friends did the ‘Groot Trek’ through to Pretoria – braving week-day traffic from Jo’burg to get through to Pretoria for a testing session at HPC. Six hours later, most of this time spent in the car, she returned home with a programme to tweak and improve her running for a specific international event 6-weeks later. Dedicated and committed she followed the programme and achieved her best results ever. She is not a pro athlete; she has a full time job, kids and various other committments. That got me thinking about sports testing and the benefits that can be achieved by sticking to a programme that is specific to your physiology and sports. I also wonder about our athletic potential and how we just don’t achieve what we could because our training is unspecific and unfocused. I certainly speak for myself here too.

Our special guest is Zac van Heerden from Exercise Solutions, in Jo’burg. Exercise Solutions is an independant sport science company – along the lines of Sport Science Institute in CT and HPC in Pretoria. Zac has an M.Sc in Medicine, specialising in Applied Physiology, and he works with a range of athletes from professional athletes and teams to Olympic and ParaOlympic athletes as well as development and recreational athletes.
Zac will be talking to us about sports testing – what physiological assessments involve, what kind of information is collected and how this infomation is used to develop individualised training programmes. Part of this is about why/when to go for testing, is this of benefit to you to help you achieve your sporting goals and how does this work for athletes who participate in multiple disciplines. He’ll also discuss how you can improve your performance and achieve your athletic potential through focused training. And Zac will mention technology that can be used to monitor, enhance and improve your training.
