65 KM MOUNTAIN WILDERNESS RUN – 135KM MOUNTAIN BIKE – 65KM PADDLE
The Garmin Wartrail challenge presented by PURE ADVENTURES is now open for the maverick, crazy, brave-hearted, extreme eco-athlete. Utilizing an extreme adventure sports terrain in the South African heartland – the North Eastern Cape – a new dimension in adventure sports opens to reveal a balanced multi-sports adventure. Human Rights day provides for a long weekend where good rains are expected for a strong flowing Orange River.
GARMIN Wartrail Challenge consists of a 265 km route starting with:
Registration: at the Lady Grey Country Club on the 19th March 2010 at 17h00.
Race briefing : to start at the Country club – 19h30.
Stage 1 – 65km Skyrun: (Adventure Mountain Wilderness Run)
04h00 START in Lady Grey, Saturday 20th MARCH 2010, from the Lady Grey City Centre and ending at Balloch via the Witteberge / Drakensberg mountain ridge-line, following the Herschel border fence
Stage 2 – 135km mountain bike:
On Sunday 21st MARCH 2010, through Wartrail, over Lundeans Nek, down the Telle River on the Lesotho Border. Turning at the Telle Junction turn off, through Sterkspruit to Herschel then follow the road passing the Witteberge Mission station and birth place of Olive Schreiner, to Mdlokovana and the Orange River.
Stage 3 – 65km canoe paddle:
On Monday 22nd MARCH 2010 to Aliwal North. Easy grade 1 rapids depending on the strength of the river for first 10 km, otherwise a long flat hard paddle to the Riverside Lodge. The finish is at the Hertzog Bridge in Aliwal North.
GARMIN Wartrail Challenge may be entered as a relay event of three members, with one member for each Stage OR as pairs. However, the solo challenge is the ultimate challenge, with one discipline per day as allowed in a totally self-sustainable event, meaning that each athlete or team will have to provide own back up, with vehicle, logistics and support crew. Pairs welcome.
GARMIN Wartrail Tri Challenge is dedicated to people affected by HIV / Aids in the Ukhahlamba district.

For Ultra Eco Athletes to qualify, you must be 100% fit and healthy, with a keen respect and knowledge of the outdoors, mountain and river including navigational skills. Temporal sports insanity is a bonus. This event is classified as an Ultra – Extreme Event.
Cost is R250.00 per stage, or R700.00 if participating in all 3. If athletes would like to do only one or two of the disciplines including K2 doubles, they are more than welcome.
